We have so many great experiences in the works. Below you will find a sample of what we offered during the 2018 event. Check back often to see what new things you can expect at 2019 Meet the Mountains Festival!


Sugar Rush XC Race & Sugar 6 Marathon Race

Sugar Rush XC will be a demanding cross country mountain bike race with categories for all skill levels. Sugar 6 Marathon Mountain Bike Race will have two marathon distance races 37 miles and 54 miles! This will be the first marathon distance mountain bike race in the Tri-Cities! Shorter non marathon distances will also be available. Both events will be held at Sugar Hollow Park, Bristol, VA

Meet the Mountains @ Winged Deer

Disc Golf Tournament presented by Premier Design Disc Golf and Flying Finch Disc Golf. This PDGA sanctioned B tier tournament is open to amateur and professional players. Divisions for all skill levels. Great opportunity to jump into competitive play in a fun and welcoming atmosphere, meet fellow disc golfers, and get some great gear! All registered amateurs will receive a players pack.  


Sunset Hike and Shallow Water Snorkeling 

Rocky Fork State Park will be hosting two great events.  Join park staff for a guided sunset hike to the highest elevation overlook in any Tennessee State Park. Whitehouse Cliffs overlook sits at 3600 feet above sea level and gives hikers an unobstructed 300 degree view of beautiful Rocky Fork. Or cool off in the crisp, cold water of Rocky Fork creek. Explore this aquatic environment that is so often overlooked. Rocky Fork is home to many aquatic insects as well as a handful of different fish species.


Run The Tweetsie 5K and 10K

Come run the 5K or 10K Saturday morning and then head over to Founders Park to join in the Meet the Mountains Outdoor Festival fun! The 10K will start at 8 AM and the 5K will start at 8:15 AM. Come run, hike, or walk with us as there is a generous 2.5 hour time limit. The goal of RTT 5K/10K is to provide an event where everyone can enjoy the Tweetsie Trail. Hoka Footwear will be on-site during the event at the Tweetsie Trail offering shoe demos.

Ladies Mountain Bike Ride At Tannery Knobs

The Ladies of SORBA Tri-Cities will be hosting a women's only mountain bike ride on August 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM at the new Tannery Knobs trails. The Trek Women's Advocates will be joining us as well. Come join your fellow riders and check out Johnson City's newest trails!

Group Mountain Bike Rides at Tannery Knobs

Explore Johnson City's newest mountain bike park with SORBA Tri-Cities and Handup Gloves!  They will be hosting two separate rides on Saturday: One in the morning at 10 AM and one in the afternoon at 1 PM.  Both rides will leave right from Founders Park.  All riders need to check-in and sign the required waiver at the SORBA Tri-Cities Tent in the Earth Zone.  Tannery Knobs has something for everyone!

Group Mountain Bike Ride at ETSU Trail System

Want to see what cross-country mountain bike trails are all about?  Join SORBA Tri-Cities for a late afternoon ride to ETSU directly from the Meet the Mountains Festival. The ride leaves at 4 PM and rides through the historic Tree Streets residential district before heading to ETSU's trail where national athletes have trained and competed.  We will end the ride on the Downhill Course before returning to Founder's Park.

Discover Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek

Explore classic wetland, meadow and hardwood forest habitats; this park has a lot going on!  Anticipate a slow-paced mile walk, stopping often for viewing and explanations of this natural world.  There is some short, but steep uphill as we navigate the ridge.  Meet in the Jacob’s Nature Parking lot, 1220 King Springs Rd, at 10:30 AM on August 25th.

Buffalo Mountain Sunrise Hike

Join Johnson City Parks and Recreation Nature Program Coordinator, Connie Deegan,  for a sunrise hike on Buffalo Mountain on August 25th.  This hike will begin at 6:00 AM SHARP to catch the sunrise at White Rock. Park below the yellow service road gate where park road ends  Note: there is a mile and a half of constant moderate uphill on the front end of this hike, then we will continue on the White Rock Loop to the other side of the park as we make our way back down Fork Knob Trail on this 3.5 mile hike.. Make sure to bring water, snacks, and a camera, you never know what you will see!

Full Moon Hike on the Balds at Roan Mountain State Park

Join park staff on a breathtaking 1.2 mile hike. There is NO better place to see the stars and moon! This hike is not strenuous but there is a fair amount of uphill.  Attendees can meet Park Ranger staff at Park Headquarters at 7:45PM on 8/24 to caravan up the mountain to Carver’s Gap. Please make sure to bring sturdy shoes, long pants, a flashlight, and extra jacket or layer. This program is only open to hikers age 12 and older. Space is limited to 15 people so make sure to call and register. Registration is open August 24th 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM.  You may register by calling the Park Office at 423-772-0190 during this time.


ETSU Basler Team Challenge Aerial Adventure Course

The Basler Team Challenge and Aerial Adventure Course is a state of the art low and high ropes challenge course. The course offers a full range of ground-level team building initiatives, and a series of aerial challenges ranging from easy to difficult between 15 – 45 feet in the air. The Aerial Adventure Course offers the opportunity for participants to stretch their physical and mental limits. ETSU Staff will be running programs Sunday, August 26 at 3:00pm, 3:15pm, 3:30pm, and 3:45pm. Cost is FREE for ETSU students/staff and $22.00 per person for all others. Bays Mountain Fire Tower Hike

Come join the YMCA as we explore Fire Tower Loop Trail on a 4.7 mile loop trail located in Kingsport, Tennessee at Bays Mountain Park. The park features a nice forest setting with wonderful wildlife exhibits, wild flowers, and absolutely beautiful 360-degree views from the fire tower located at the top of Bays Mountain. The trail we are taking is rated as moderate although there is a small 0.6 mile section rated as strenuous. Meet at the Greater Kingsport Family YMCA on Saturday, August 25th at 8:30am. Boot Camp Fitness Class at Kingsport Family YMCA

Come join us Sunday at 12:30pm at the Greater Kingsport Family YMCA as we work up a sweat with our fun Boot Camp class. Our Boot Camp is designed for maximum calorie burn in the shortest amount of time. We want you to have fun, push yourself, and build camaraderie with others! Introduction to Fly Fishing

Have you ever wanted to learn what it takes to catch fish with a fly rod?  Join members from the Overmountain and Cherokee Chapters of Trout Unlimited at Rocky Fork State Park as they lead you through basic fly rod and reel setup, different casting techniques, useful knots, fly tying, and reading the water.  The program will begin at 10am on 8/25 at Rocky Fork State Park.  Please meet near the main parking lot.
